“The second week of Telus Festival was just as amazing as the first. There were awesome events like a pro ski halfpipe contest on Blackcomb and a big air ski comp at the base of the mountains on Saturday night. I went to see Dilated Peoples at the Longhorn and they were incredible, as was RJD2 at “The End” which turned out to be a legendary final party. None of these things are in this video however, because I decided to show you the two great events that I just happened to stumble upon. I headed up Blackcomb one day and found the Palm Bay Slush Cup going on in front of the Glacier Creek Lodge. This was one of the coolest events that I have ever seen. The footage should be self explanatory. The other event that I just happened to stumble upon was the band Ozomatli. I had never heard of them but they put on a fantastic show and had the huge outdoor crowd dancing up a storm. Check it out!”
The Telus World Ski & Snowboard Festival in Whistler is half way done and it’s been a legendary good time so far. There’s still powder to be found on the mountains and the events and nightlife are incredible. In this video I’m showing you a pro slopestyle snowboard event, Swollen Members performing live, a skier launching off of a huge Blackcomb cat track gap, snowboard legend Danny Kass’ take on things & Pro Snowboard Filmer Colin D. Watt’s assessment of the festival. I’m also taking you to “Dustin Craven’s Super Fun Pipe Jam,” where I saw some amazing action & spoke w/ Dustin Craven as well as the Monster girls!
With 40+cms of fresh light powder to play in, the 3rd snowiest winter of all time keeps delivering amazing ski conditions! I was working on a video full of epic faceshot footage until I saw this awesome video by Garywayne Skis. Not only does it show off how incredible this week has been, but it shows off a revolutionary omnidirectional, full rocker, full reverse side-cut, concave ski design. I’ve seen Whistler local Sheldon Steckman developing and testing these skis over the years and I’m always very jealous at how much fun it looks like he’s having on them. While the majority of the ski companies in the world just piggyback off of each others designs it’s so nice to see people who genuinely love skiing creating something totally unique and awesome.
This past weekend I caught up with local snowboarder Benji Staempfli for a couple of laps in the Whistler Terrain Park and then headed down to the base of the mountains to check out the Redbull Buttercup snowboard contest. I’m a skier, but I do love checking out great snowboarding. Good times!
This week was a beautiful one in Whistler. It felt like spring down low and winter on top of the mountains. The views were also spectacular and the riding was great. I met up with Andrew Wood and Tristan Hansen to build a jump over a tree. We had a great time and after we were done I skied down to the village and was surprised by a jump with a giant airbag to land in, free for the public! You never know what might happen in Whistler.
Every Year I make sure to check out the Showcase Showdown snowboard contest on Blackcomb Mountain. This year the contest was as amazing as ever. The snowboarders were battling it out on the slopestyle course for big cash prizes and the after party at Merlin’s was legendary. A Whole Lotta Led, Whistler’s Led Zeppelin cover band was on fire, and kept the party rocking until the bar staff kicked everybody out at closing time.
I’m officially calling out 2010/2011 as the best season in my seven years here. I don’t remember the last time I saw the sun and I can barely remember anything other than fresh powder. It’s been deep for most of the season, but this week we were skiing truely bottomless powder. I’ve been out shooting photos with Douglas Favre lately and a couple of days ago we both had what was probably the best run of our lives(it was also our “warm-up” run). Here’s a few shots of Doug from my helmet cam:
This week was another incredible one on Whistler/Blackcomb. I caught up with Canadian Freeskiing Tour athlete Rachel Findler and skied a ton of fresh powder. She used to be a snowboarder but got turned on to skiing about 4 years ago and has already earned a podium spot and a 4th place finish in the Canadian extreme skiing contest world. Check out how much fun she had this week!
Earlier in the season I got the chance to ski for a day with the special forces of ski school, the Whistler Freeride Club. The club is for talented skiers aged 8-14 who have become too advanced for regular ski school or are looking for something different than a racing program. All of the kids are specially selected so the level of skiing remains extremely high. The coaches are great and the amazing talent of the kids blows me away. Next time you see a group of small people skiing way better than you, don’t feel bad, it’s probably just the Whistler Freeride Club. Here are a couple of cool videos of the club from coach Jesse Robson. Enjoy.
This week was totally amazing! Thursday was quite possibly the best powder day of my life. It was incredibly deep and extremely light and fluffy with temperatures just cold enough to keep your goggles from fogging up. I was shooting photos with Douglas Favre and the snow was so deep that I could barely even see him in some of the shots!
We also shot some helmet cam footage, but nothing came out better than a video shot by local Whistler skier, Pierrot Bernier. Pierrot’s an amazing skier that you’ve probably seen in your favorite ski magazine. Here’s how he enjoyed this past week:
